Usage

The usage of the term username is widespread and probably more frequent than user ID. But the term username implies that the unique identifier used to authenticate is the name of the user, which is wrong in many identity management systems. For scientific papers, the term user ID should be preferred as it is more generic and accurate.

Similarly, the term user implies that the subject or entity linked to the digital identity is a person. For this reason, the terms subject id or entity id would be even more generic and accurate but they are not in common use.
