Following the recommendation of Humbley, 2017 (p. 323), the intensional definition type is adopted in this dictionary. In lexicography, intensional definitions are definitions that describe the characteristics constitutive of a concept by providing the superordinate concept and its delimiting characteristics. In less technical terms, it provides the necessary and sufficient conditions linked to the concept.

One simple criteria that is intuitively simple to understand to assess the quality of a definition is that it should allow the distinction of this term with closely related terms.

That being said, we will apply commons sense and enrich definitions as necessary to privilege understanding and utility.

When complementary information would provide valuable information to a term definition, such information should be appended to the definition in a an encyclopedic note titled “Note”, distinguishing the strict definition from that complementary information.
