Definitions

Definition 1

An Identity Guardian is a role in Identity Management Systems played by the person with the legal power to act on behalf of the Identity Subject. Identity Management Systems opened to subjects that are minor, under legal guardianship or who grant power of attorney to other persons may need or have the legal obligation to manage these relationships in a particular way during identity enrollment and throughout the overall identity lifecycle. In Identity Management Systems that do not have such needs or legal obligations, the roles of Identity Subject and Identity Guardian are merged and generally referred to as the Identity Subject.

Example

Eve and Bob were 10 ten years old and wanted to subscribe to a social network. When they first tried to subscribe online, the form asked for their names, contact details and if they were minor. They ticked the minor checkbox and the online form asked for their parent approval. Eve unclicked the minor checkbox and completed the enrollment process. But Bob asked help from his parents. They completed the form with him and from there on played the role of Identity Guardians, while Bob remained the Identity Subject.
